Some patients want to get a more youthful looking appearance, but aren’t ready for a facelift or neck lift procedure or don’t have the time to commit to a lengthy recovery. Ulthera, also known as Ultherapy, is a non-surgical treatment that can tighten the skin on the face and neck, creating a more youthful look without the need for surgery or a long recovery process. The procedure affects the same layers of skin as a traditional facelift, without making any incisions.
What is Ulthera?
Ulthera isn’t a laser and it’s not an injection. Instead, the treatment uses ultrasound energy to stimulate the production of collagen beneath the skin. The procedure was approved by the FDA in 2009 to tighten and lift, and is the first and only non-invasive procedure to receive FDA approval for lift.
What Happens During the Procedure?
At first, Ulthera treatment seems similar to any other ultrasound treatment. The surgeon places a wand on the patient’s face in the area to be treated. An image of the connective tissue beneath the skin is projected onto a screen. The surgeon then uses the Ulthera wand to direct ultrasound energy to specific spots beneath the skin. In response to the energy, the body begins producing new collagen.
The procedure typically takes less than 90 minutes, depending on how many areas are treated. Before the treatment, the patient’s skin is cleaned and an ultrasound gel applied to it. Most patients are completely comfortable during the procedure, but some might feel a bit of discomfort or tingling, based on how deep the treatment is. The surgeon can prescribe medication before the treatment to help reduce any discomfort, and patients are always offered a Valium if they are not going to drive home.
Ulthera Recovery Time and Side Effects
Unlike surgery, there is no lengthy recovery time after Ulthera. Patients are able to get back to their regular activities right away. There are no adverse side effects noted.
Results from Ulthera
Results from Ulthera don’t appear instantly. Instead, they appear over a period of two to three months. The treated area becomes more lifted and the skin tighter as the body works to replace old collagen with new, more elastic collagen. It can take up to six months for results to appear in some cases.
Patients require just a single Ulthera treatment, and results are long-lasting.
If you aren’t ready for surgery, but would like to tighten loose skin in the brow or neck area, Ulthera might be right for you.
