My son will be undergoing otoplasty surgery.

May 24, 2010 by Dr. Epstein

Question:

My son will be undergoing otoplasty surgery. I’m trying to get him prepared and thoroughly explain the process so he knows what to expect. Can you tell me how many visits will need to be scheduled after his surgery and what will happen during these visits?

Answer:

The first post-operative visit will be on the first or second day after surgery for dressing check and drain removal. Not all patients get drains. This is at the doctor’s discretion. The head dressing will remain on for one week. You should notify your doctor if it is too tight.

Tylenol (or a comparable pain reliever) may be prescribed. The patient should not take Aspirin, Ibuprofen, Vitamin E or products containing these medications for at least 2 weeks before and 2 weeks after surgery. Extra-strength Tylenol may be taken.

Following removal of the head dressing at one week, a head band of any type, similar to a tennis head band, may be worn continuously or when going to bed at night. This will be directed by the doctor. The tennis head band should be worn at night while sleeping for 1 month.

Once the head dressing is removed, at 1 week, the patient’s hair may be washed with a mild baby shampoo unless instructed otherwise.

The area of incision behind the ear should be cleansed gently with peroxide, at least 3x a day. Vitamin A&D ointment and or Neosporin can be applied.
