Question: Hello! I am hoping to have a Facelift in May/June of this year. I am nervous about the surgery but I’m wondering if there are there nonsurgical options? What are the benefits and side effects of them?
Answer : The benefit of a nonsurgical procedure is just that: one does not have to go through the process of surgery and the recovery time is minimal. The appearance of wrinkles, fine lines, and the spots that occur with aging can be improved through the use of a variety of skin resurfacing techniques.
Popular Skin Resurfacing Techniques
- Chemical peels
- Laser skin resurfacing
Injectables such as Botox and collagen can also improve wrinkles, while Restylane and Juvederm can improve nasolabial folds (laugh lines). Although the injectables and fillers that are available can assist in concealing and somewhat retarding the aging process, they are not permanent, as compared to a surgical facelift which can set back the aging face appearance by as much as 10 years on average. A surgical facelift is also the only way to negate the effect of gravity on skin and the deeper tissues, something that no injectable can currently do. Additionally, the transfer of body fat to the face during a facelift adds volume to an aging face, helping to create an even more youthful appearance. A facelift addresses problems such as jowls along the jawline, drooping of the midcheek fat pads, and sagging loose skin along the neckline. However, being a surgical procedure, a facelift requires a significant amount of time to heal compared to the injectables and fillers – most women are presentable at 5 to 7 days (because longer hair can conceal the healing incisions around the ears), while most men typically are advised to take 10 to 12 days away from work. You should make an appointment for a consultation if you have not already done so. Dr. Epstein and his team will help to alleviate any concerns about the procedure by explaining everything to you. If you are still in any way hesitant or feel that it is not right for you, than you should not go through with the surgery.
