Rhytidectomy, or facelift surgery, is one of the most commonly desired facial plastic surgical procedures. The result of this procedure is to reverse the tell-tale signs of aging, helping your face to look its best, giving a healthy, more youthful appearance. While more common in women, men also choose to undergo a variety of the procedure to improve a hanging neck.
Through carefully aligned, mostly hidden incisions made around the ears and the surrounding hair, the rhytidectomy allows for the tightening and lifting of excess skin, the removal of excess fat along the jaw and under the chin, and the elevation of the sagging muscles and cheek fat pad. The result is to smooth out the jowls along the jawline, restore the neckline to a more youthful appearance, and smooth out wrinkles along the neck and face. Long-lasting results are obtained by returning the muscles to a more youthful position, not merely tightening excess skin. A well-performed facelift should look natural, with free-hanging earlobes, normal hairline and sideburns, no significant scarring and not a pulled look.
Rhytidectomy is a 3- to 4-hour procedure usually performed on an outpatient basis. All sutures are removed within six to ten days following surgery after which patients may return to work and most activities.
